New Offshore Race 2025 – St Mawes to Salcombe 16th May 2025

During the wash-up meeting at the end of the 2024 season, there was much discussion about adding an extra Offshore Series Race, to even up the numbers between Coastal (currently six) and Offshore (recently increased to five – Eddystone migrated from Coastal to Offshore, and L’Aber Wrac’h was added too). There was also a request to have a longer race earlier in the season to help with Fastnet qualification.

We discussed several options for dates and destinations and found only one possible date for this extra race in the season (May 16th weekend in 2025). Salcombe was a favourite destination, and they have welcomed us – both from the point of view of the Harbour Master and also Salcombe Yacht Club (SYC).

St Mawes Sailing Club have agreed to be the Organizing Authority and we intend to race from their start line in St Mawes, on the Friday evening. to the Gammon Buoy, just outside Salcombe Harbour. It is likely that the IRC fleet will have a slightly longer course than the YTC fleet, with the intention that all boats will arrive during the daytime in Salcombe. Several potential courses are available to add distance to the approximately 49nm point-to-point route – on the left is shown what might be the longest route of about 78nm (wind and weather dependant).

The intention is that we will have a prize-giving in SYC in the early evening on the Saturday and we are told that they have a rather good chef there. Therefore we are arranging a communal dinner at SYC, after the prize-giving, at a reasonable cost, and we hoping that all competitors will join us for dinner there, before most will return to the Falmouth area on the Sunday at their own pace.

We do hope that as many boats as possible can join us for this race – at this stage, we do not anticipate any additional race fees (over and above the COGS Offshore Series entry fee) for this new race.
